40 Years of Building with Fowler’s

The story behind us – Fowler Homes has a long history of building quality Kiwi homes in New Zealand over the past 40 years.

Our journey within the building industry began in 1984, when K Fowler Construction Ltd was established in Christchurch on 15 June. We opened our first display centre on Lewis Street and soon became a pioneer in designing and building quality homes across the region.

The 1980s took many of us on a nostalgic trip back in time – fashion, foods, social history, population, and consumerism were growing rapidly.

Our first-ever display centre had a house façade inside the building. We used this to show our early customers the roof, windows, bricks, front door, kitchen, and taps. Alongside this, we offered 9 core house plans that clients could customise. This struck a chord with the local market, and we were soon building 75 homes per year, with an average build time of 8-10 weeks!

Even with the quick build times, Fowler Homes set itself apart from the competition by offering well-oriented homes. Solar gains were important for passive heating, and we used solid 35mm Rimu frames (which clients often painted) and quality fittings and finishes. Our relationship with our industry partners and customers was at the heart of all projects.

How has the building industry evolved?

Throughout the years, we have continued to refine our design and build offerings; the evolution in how we use our homes has changed from things like:

  • While neutral colours prevail, dark, moody accents calm spaces like snugs or media rooms.
  • The use of hot water heat pump systems, solar panels, and battery adoption is being focused on, as well as more sustainable choices
  • Central all-home air conditioning with fresh filtered air systems popular
  • Tapware trending into brushed metal finishes.
  • Panelling on walls, joinery, and interior doors.
  • Large floor-to-ceiling windows/doors for free solar gains.
  • Timber planking floors or vinyl planking with timber appearance is popular in hard surface areas.
  • Industry has become more specialized; in the past, the builder would do nearly everything on site, but now you sub a lot of things out
  • With technology now, invoicing, scheduling, and admin have become more manageable
  • Laundries are no longer the dark, dingy spaces or afterthoughts of old; instead, they are now designed and finished to a higher standard, offering more storage, tiled splash backs,  built-in joinery, overhead joinery, built-in sinks

Some things don't change ... People & Craftmanship

In our line of work, the most rewarding aspects remain timeless. Collaborating with exceptional clients to craft a home that perfectly suits their family’s needs, bringing it to life during construction, and finally exceeding their expectations with the finished product is an unparalleled experience.

There’s something magical about the moment when the flooring and kitchen come together and hearing the excitement in our client’s voices as they envision moving into their new homes. It’s the proud sense of accomplishment when driving past a completed project and thinking, “That’s one of ours.”

The journey of designing and building a new home is truly special. When approached thoughtfully, the results are nothing short of stunning. But perhaps the best part of it all is being alongside our clients throughout this incredible journey—from the first meeting to the day we hand over the keys. Seeing their eyes light up and hearing them say, “This is our new home,” makes every step worthwhile.
